Hunter "Patch" Adams is a middle-aged man who decides to commit suicide one day. He was given the nickname "Patch" because of helping one of his fellow inmates and discovers his desire to help people through laughter, understanding, and personal connection. Two years later, after leaving the institution, he enrolls into a medical school and quickly makes friends with another student, Truman, and shares his dream with him. Patch soon recruits the stiff and serious Carin Fisher, whom he falls in love with. In school, as Patch wants to help the patients through humor, Dean Walcott wants to force Patch to follow the rules, even if it means kicking him out of school. As the film progresses, Patch must decide if he wants to continue his efforts and dream while Dean Walcott fights to have him thrown out of school.

Patch was a troubled man and was admitted to the mental institute because he tried to commit suicide.

While in the mental institute, he went to one inmate and saw the cup of coffee dropping. He had tape and tried to patch the hole of the cup, preventing the cup from dropping, and "patched up'' the loneliness of his life. Therefore his friend called him "Patch."

Arthur, one inmate of the institute and a friend of Patch, gave him his nickname. It was for patching up the loneliness and emptiness Arthur felt.

I've always wanted to help people, it may be big or small. If I have a chance in helping others, I would do it. And reaching my dreams is one goal for me, with hard work and love to God, it would come true.

It is to help people even in small ways. It can make a big difference in their lives.
29. What part of the movie struck you most?

That's when Patch helped the kids and even the old people. He tried to make those kids with cancer laugh and entertained the old people too. And he even made the fantasies of the old people come true, just to make their last days living in this world meaningful.
30. What did you learn from this movie?

I learned that hopes and dreams will come true, by working hard and praying to God. Helping people is not that hard, and it can make the people happy. Even with little things, we can help people and make our dreams come true.
